I must admit; this is a list of suggestions that a truly depressed person could not utilize. Even a person who is functioning at high level would be challenged by this list: "Control you thinking...Keep positive... stop bad behavior ...fix your diet... develop interests," etc.

If a depressed person had the ability to control their thinking and think positively, they would have never become depressed in the first place.

Not only having worked in the field for nearly thirty years, I had first suffered from severe depression many years ago and discovered a way out of it. Recommendations like these only made me feel worse about myself, because I was helpless to control it.

The first step to recovering from real depression is to admit that one cannot solve it ALONE. The first and most formidable problem starts with that awareness.

After recovering from depression back in the late seventies, I have never had another relapse. I do not take medication either. Some people need lithium, but others need to learn the source of what is causing their depression. Most often it is anger at oneself over a past experience; that is the major culprit. Without a qualified person to trust, most depressed people will never recover.

This article is absurd and ridiculous.

I have one tip for the author; stop giving tips about a subject that you lack any meaningful understanding of and that will be an improvement.

Hi SC! You are the most reasonable and the most sensible person I know here on Propeller! Thanks one thousand times for your comments...In my opinion, this story is written by and for people in quite very good health who don't suffer, for whom everything is OK, who have thousand and thousand friends who can help them...May be one of these days they could understand what is to lose everything, even the hope, even the esteem of oneself, even trust on the others, and for ending: to become a Sociopath! I do hope the best for them! I had a friend in a such situation, and my poor presence wasn't enough for helping her!I am terrified that can happen to me...It's the first time since I am on Propeller that I am going to sink a story...provided that I can because I voted by mistake...LOL

This list would not work for many depressed people, but for certains types of depression it would. A proactive approach is helpful when depression falls along the lines of mere dissatisfaction with life or when one has depressive personality or when one is engaged in self-pity. There are many sides and types of depression and this list directs the behavioral side. But yeah I woulld nix the Brady Bunch photo. Also I would add a medical disclaimer...serious depression would not be helped by this approach, requires at least professional evaluation as a safety precaution and the reader may feel more depressed by reading this tough love approach. One they are too depressed to even attempt. Nice work but the intended audience should be narrowed a bit.

Strong and correct belief in God, will keep people from all kinds of trouble. Understanding the purpose in life is very important to live a life that will keep us happy all the time, other than that no advice nor amount of tips can make anyone from being depressed. A very simple advice is, put your trust in God and never worry about anything and accept life as it unfolds. We are emotional beings we can be disturbed by every thing that happens in life.

Been there done that.

Each person has to work with their doctor/family to find the answer. In the end I stopped taking the contaceptive pill. I know that's not going to help anyone else but it was about following my own instinct in the end.

I have been discussing this subject today about a person who tried suicide yesterday. I know many people in the same family also tried, some succeeded. Can this also be a genetic tendency? Or that they learnt by example?

One of the most positive things I had during difficult times was pencil and paper. I have recently put much of my poetry on my website, but don't worry, it's inspiring more than depressing and many happy poems too. I hope!
