"We invite everyone throughout North America and around the world to turn off the lights for an hour starting at 8 p.m. (your own local time) whether at home or at work, with friends and family or solo, in a big city or a small town.

What will you do when the lights are off?"

My kids and I are making a round cake, and decorating it with blue and green icing to make it look like the World. At 8 p.m., we are going to grab a slice of cake and picnic on the living room floor by candlelight.

Hear hear for ZG and for Sydney!

Sorry though zg that you didn't get this up earlier to give the heads-up in time to us benighted Europeans - in my country our current apology of a President is a denier.

This is a symbolic event that produces a drop in the bucket. It is to focus on an event that growing evidence says is going the other way. The 2000 meter down measuring sensors that were placed there about 10 years ago to give a clearer and more accurate definition of temperature, water speed, and direction of the water in the ocean. These show a very slight drop in temperature not an increase. Over the last decade the average temperature of the earth was flat except this year was a little lower. A polish scientist who worked for NOAA quit and finished his research that NOAA didn't want finished. His findings are that greenhouse gases do not have the green house effect. This explains why some of the graphs showing CO2 and temperature have CO2 lagging at times.

          Interesting!

I prefer to look at this more as a heightening of awareness for voluntary energy conservation. Which, global warming/climate change or not, is always a good thing.

Not even a drop but it makes some people feel useful and we all need to conserve. By the way burning candles does more harm than my mini-twist florescent.

And one unnamed Polish "scientist" who "quit" makes a summer?

On this we should base our opinions and worldview?

I think it's a great idea, and a grand statement Z-gal! We'll certainly do it in NYC, after all, we're used to blackouts here.

(I'll be eating in a restaurant at that time. I just hope I can see what I'm eating.)

I would not risk that in NYC. Well then again, as long as you're not eating on Canal street you should be fine.

I will be turning extra lights on. Just the rebel in me.

I live in a little cabin in the mountains on 750 acres, so I conserve energy 365 days a year. One hour? What kind of crap is that?

The world government is taking note of your profligacy. Furthermore, since you are amongst the world's elite property owners, your property will be first in line for redistribution. Here's why: there are 36.8 billion acres of land on the face of the earth and 6.6 billion people. By simple irrefutable logic and my fiat (since I will be supreme arbiter of the world, of course) no person will be entitled to more than 5.5 acres (allowing some room for population growth).

Too late to join in for me tho....

While my jury is still out on the Global Warming issue, ANYTHING that raises the profile of the requirement to lower the world's energy requirements, has got to be a good thing.

just another socialist money grab from the goracle fanatics--they know when things like this go the balot box they loose big--so they go to the world court , the judges and all the other un-elected power base to move us one step closer to their marxist view--its just more and more intrusion from big brother--like the bill they tried in calif..where else..to have govt controlled thermostats in homes...but they wont give up till we are miserable together in the rice paddies living on our daily allotment--and like ethonal..another huge failure...the environmental costs of the mercury in these bulbs is way more than the energy savings--break one and your entire house has something like 100 times the allowed levels--wait till they start giving people the bills to clean their homes--a simple heating oil leak from a home tank can cost 300,000 plus and the EPA is there for years after to monitor--mandatory cleansing for mercury is the logical next step

Nice gesture Ziegy, but unlike gasoline, natural gas and other forms of man-made energy, electricity is the one energy that cannot be stored (except perhaps in batteries).

So, in essence, the energy that was NOT used last night was wasted.

I do agree with the concept of conservation, but not in the sense we are "saving the planet".

simonsez- I have an idea to store electricity that does not require batteries, you use the power to heat water and store the energy in hot water, to reclaim the energy you use an air conditioning system running in reverse, the water heats the gas which makes pressure and you us the pressure to run a turbine to make the power, this system is used in a small town in Alaska who use hot springs for the source of hot water.

As for turning off everything for an hour we did it but it was sort of cold here so when we put the power back on I imagine we ended up with a net loss except for the power saved for lights, computer, television and those sort of things.

My power bill at this time of year is about 240 dollars for a month, if I figure it out the hour only saved me around 32 cents.

$240 a month!!! My water, power, trash and sewer are all on one bill. It runs me about $50 a month. My gas costs me another 25-35. My goodness CR, you need to head south.
