Depending on the content Digg may be a better choice but then again it all comes down to who you want to read your content. Digg is more for the serious Technology expert and for those are very integrated in the Web. Netscape I'd say is more for the older, less knowledgeable Tech crowd but you get more people interested in news and politics.

You can still earn "some money" from your blog if it contains unique, addictive, and informative content. This will help bringing organic traffic through search engines then monetization of your blog through ads. Briefly, No traffic No money. Unique content is just one big element of a site success, other elements may include linking, branding, SEOing (white or black), advertising and so on. Oops, forget: and PATIENCE: if you do start a blog with a topic you LOVE to write about, then keep writing in a persistent way, you'll surly succeed.

Also one other very important thing the article forgot to include was freelancing. True you don't have the joy of starting your own Blog but often times you can very, very flexible terms such as weekly postings, daily postings and most pay per post so you can more or less each month however a certain level on consistency is expected.
